Summertime Bending Trees

Have been noticing over the last couple of years that hardwood trees, especially White Birch and Poplar of all sizes are bending over in the summertime. It seems to happen when it is most humid, but have not found the actual answer to this yet.

When driving down the highway, you can see whole stands of the same kind of trees bend over, sometimes, almost to the ground. Size does not seem to matter.

On small trails in the woods, it almost blocks passage.

This is something to look for next time you are driving the highway, in the summertime...

  1. Why do you think the trees are bent in one direction? Wind? leaning towards sunlight?

  2. Hi there Mom.

The case of the bending trees remains a mystery to me. A modest Google search did not turn up anything helpful.

I can definitely say that ice buildup and the wind are not factors, from my observations. The direction of the bending seems to be to the easiest path to the ground. As you suggested, photosynthesis may be the culprit, but I don’t see how, and why would it only affect two kinds of trees instead of them all?

From Ontario to New Brunswick there are a many stands of trees doing this, but not along the whole route. Most Birch and Poplar are standing normally.

At this point, there is not enough evidence to even make a good guess and as of this morning the same trees are still bending...
